SLIM ‘Agri Saviya Marketing Asswedduma’, transforming the mindset of today’s farmers into tomorrow’s agroreneurs
The Sri Lanka Institute of Marketing (SLIM) recently inaugurated the first group of 40 students of the 1st Agribusiness Management and Entrepreneurship Program in Kandy at the Grand Kandyan Hotel.
The Certificate in Agri-Business and Entrepreneurship (CABE) program is a unique qualification available in Sri Lanka. The big colorful launch took place under the patronage of the Minister of State for Skills Development, Vocational Education, Research and Innovation, Dr Seetha Arambepola. Professor Gamini Hitinayake of the Faculty of Agriculture of the University of Peradeniya and Asanka De Mel, the founder of LOVI Ceylan, honored the occasion as guest of honor and guest of honor.

Six collaborative partners from the Agripreneurs Forum, the Federation of Local Government Authorities of Sri Lanka (FSLGA), the Ceylon Chamber of Commerce, the Smallholder Agribusiness Partnerships Program and the Export Development Board, have joined forces with SLIM to form a force. elementary school in Sri Lanka to bridge the knowledge gap in the agricultural sector. Five strategic partners – SLT-Mobitel, Keells, SDB Bank, Samaposha CBL and Sri Lanka Insurance Corporation have joined forces to strengthen its national deployment strategy through partnerships respectively in the sectors Mobile and Technology, Retail, Banking, CSR and Insurance. Each strategic partner distributed agro-tool kits to the inaugural group of 40 students. SLT-Mobitel provided free mobile connections, SLIC facilitated agri-insurance policies, SDB bank opened free bank accounts, and Keells and CBL Samaposha organized training camps for the first group of students.
The Elpitiya Plantations of Aitken Spence, Singer Sri Lanka, Hameedia, Snackings Ltd., Lovi and SLT-Mobitel were partners in the scholarship program by sponsoring 30 needy families to take the inaugural CABE program at the SLIM branch in Kandy .
Agriculture is often seen as the backbone of the local economy even today. Despite Sri Lanka’s rapid urbanization and shift to a service economy, the country remains largely rural and agriculture is still seen as an industry with enormous potential. CABE is a three-month professional qualification taught in all three languages and the course is delivered in a blended approach – on-site and online sessions depending on the nature of the module. On-site sessions will be organized in Uva and Central provinces, as needed. In addition, the course consists of 11 modules, which will be delivered in the form of interactive learning sessions and practical work.
Agriculture is linked and affected by many swirling forces of change (fluctuations in weather, scarce natural resources and volatile commodity markets and many more) than most other industries, but it is also the element vital to the economy. CABE offers the ideal learning experience for aspiring local entrepreneurs who have an insatiable appetite for innovation in the agriculture industry. CABE will fill this knowledge gap by providing the foundation for training agricultural professionals with a 21st century curriculum. Farmers and agricultural business owners will be developed as agripreneurs who will be equipped with knowledge, skills and competencies to seize global opportunities in the industry. Charaka Perera further acknowledged the approval of the government of Minister Dr. Seetha Armabepola to incorporate Agri Saviya as a key driver of the national agricultural reform system as part of the Presidential Task Force’s Green Economy.
Minister Dr. Seetha Arambepola addressing the assembly said: “I sincerely commend the collaborative efforts of many stakeholders who have boldly joined together with a vision by ushering in a transformation program called Agri Saviya. This unification of Agri Saviya is a perfect example of the national spirit animated by SLIM with the leadership of the president of Agri Saviya and the formidable forces that animate it. My ministry will be complete to help deploy Agri Saviya. This initiative is of extreme value as it sets a country priority and works for Sri Lanka’s success as a team, connecting government and private sectors. We hope to bring the support of the State to this commendable work and we invite the leaders of SLIM to join forces to develop female entrepreneurship.
SLIM President Thilanka Abeygunwardana, being the key collaborative partner in driving Agri Saviya’s CABE, in her speech to the assembly, said: “For more than 50 years we have been the premier marketing institute of Sri Lanka educating generations of marketers and striving to grow the economy. .
